Please describe Wallace & Green’s competitive advantage
Our team is our competitive advantage. Our diverse team of highly qualified professionals are the backbone of our business. W&G’s specialised skills have been forged in over 40 years of combined experience, allowing us to deliver continuous results for our clients.
Our range of service offerings, for the built environment, has been crafted by hands-on practical (field tested) experience, together with a continuous investment in education of our team. This ensures that the most recent and relevant industry knowledge is applied to our projects.
In your opinion what is the level of ESG compliance in South Africa – and what are the areas that need improvement?
I feel that South Africa’s ESG compliance is moderate to relatively strong on governance, but weaker on environmental execution and social outcomes.
We have some of the best environmental legislation in the world but our enforcement lets us down. The overall picture is uneven: many large firms have formal ESG structures and reporting in place, but disclosure quality and actual implementation still vary widely across sectors.
Areas that I feel require improvement:
- Faster transition from coal to renewable energy;
- Improved water conservation and wastewater treatment;
- Stronger biodiversity protection and land rehabilitation, particularly in mining;
- Addressing South Africa’s high levels of unemployment and inequality; and
- Improved transparency and consistency in ESG reporting
Environmental impact studies are crucial for sustainability – how do we ensure environmental preservation does not get overridden by commercial interests?
Ensure environmental preservation is built into the rules, incentives, and decision-making process so it cannot be treated as optional. The practical answer is to make environmental limits legally binding, transparent, and costly to ignore, while making sustainable choices easier and more profitable than destructive ones.
The key is governance. Environmental regulators need independence, adequate funding, and the power to reject projects that fail minimum standards, even if they promise jobs or revenue.
What exciting plans are on the horizon for Wallace & Green?
We recently opened our Cape Town office and whilst we have been active in Cape Town over the last few years we hope our local presence and expertise will allow us to better understand our client’s needs, create client-centric solutions and build great relationships in the process.
